Crochet Sunflower Bucket Hat: A Handmade Touch of Sunshine | The Salty Hook

Bring a little sunshine wherever you go with a handmade crochet sunflower bucket hat! 🌻

There is something special about creating wearable pieces with your own hands. Every stitch tells a story, and every finished project carries a little piece of the maker's creativity and heart.

My latest creation for The Salty Hook is this crochet sunflower bucket hat, inspired by the cheerful beauty of sunflowers and the fresh, natural colors of summer. With its playful floral design, comfortable fit, and handmade charm, this hat is a lovely accessory for beach trips, sunny afternoons, casual outfits, and everyday adventures.

Whether you are a crochet enthusiast or someone looking for a new handmade fashion accessory, this sunflower bucket hat is a fun project to try.

Why I Love Making Crochet Sunflower Bucket Hats

Sunflowers remind me of warmth, hope, and the beauty of God's creation. Their bright petals turn toward the sun, making them a beautiful symbol of joy and resilience.

As someone who enjoys crochet, I love how simple materials can be transformed into something beautiful and useful. A bucket hat is also a practical fashion accessory, offering shade while adding a touch of personality to an outfit.

Here is why this design is one of my favorites:

  • Summer-ready style: A cheerful sunflower-inspired design perfect for tropical weather.

  • Handmade charm: Every stitch makes the finished piece unique.

  • Versatile fashion: Pair it with a sundress, a casual shirt, denim shorts, or a beach outfit.

  • A thoughtful handmade gift: A lovely present for friends, mothers, sisters, or anyone who loves flowers.

  • Creative expression: Experiment with sunflower yellow, earthy brown, and fresh green shades.

Materials Used

For my sunflower bucket hat, I used the following materials:

Yarn colorsSunflower yellow, brown, and green, depending on the design
Stitch markersOptional, to mark the beginning of each round
ScissorsFor cutting yarn
Tapestry needleFor weaving in the ends

Skill level: Beginner to intermediate

Construction: Worked in joined or continuous rounds, depending on your preferred technique.

Stitches used:

  • CH – Chain

  • SL ST – Slip stitch

  • SC – Single crochet

  • HDC – Half double crochet

  • DC – Double crochet

  • INC – Increase (2 stitches in the same stitch)

Crochet Sunflower Bucket Hat Pattern

This pattern follows the crown construction I used, beginning with 12 double crochet stitches and increasing through Round 4. The crown continues to Round 8, with half double crochet stitches used in the final round.

The exact stitch counts for the later rounds and brim can be adjusted to suit your head measurement and preferred hat shape.

Part 1: Making the Circular Crown

Round 1: The Center Circle

  • Make a magic ring.

  • Work 12 DC into the ring.

  • Pull the ring tight.

  • Join with a slip stitch if working in joined rounds.

Total: 12 DC.

Round 2: Increase

  • CH 2 (if needed for your preferred turning or joining method).

  • Work 2 DC in each stitch around.

Total: 24 DC.

Round 3: Increase

  • Work 1 DC in the first stitch.

  • Work 2 DC in the next stitch.

  • Repeat around.

Total: 36 DC.

Round 4: Increase

  • Work 1 DC in each of the next 2 stitches.

  • Work 2 DC in the following stitch.

  • Repeat around.

Total: 48 DC.

Round 5: Continue the Circle

  • Work 1 DC in each stitch around.

  • Maintain the stitch count without increasing.

Total: 48 DC.

Round 6: Build the Crown

  • Work 1 DC in each stitch around.

  • Check that the crown lies flat and has the desired width.

Total: 48 DC.

Round 7: Prepare for the Crown's Final Round

  • Work 1 DC in each stitch around.

  • Check the circumference against the intended hat size.

Total: 48 DC.

Round 8: Half Double Crochet Finish

  • Work 1 HDC in each stitch around.

  • Join with a slip stitch if working in joined rounds.

Total: 48 HDC.

Maker's note: The stitch counts in Rounds 5–7 are a suggested even-round continuation based on the 48 stitches established in Round 4. If the crown is too small or too large, you can add or adjust increase rounds. The number of stitches in the original hat beyond Round 4 was not specified.

Part 2: Creating the Sunflower Granny Square Sides

After completing the crown, continue working downward to create the sides of the bucket hat.

What makes my crochet sunflower bucket hat extra special is its beautiful floral sides, made from six sunflower granny squares. Each square features a sunflower motif with golden petals surrounding a brown center, creating a cheerful, colorful design that brings the hat to life.

Instead of crocheting the sides in continuous rounds, this design uses individual granny squares that are joined together to form the body of the bucket hat.

Materials for the Sunflower Granny Squares

  • Milk Cotton 4-ply yarn in brown, yellow, and your chosen background color.

  • 3.5 mm Tulip crochet hook.

  • Scissors.

  • Tapestry needle for joining the squares and weaving in the ends.

How to Crochet the Sunflower Motif

Round 1: Create the Sunflower Center

  • Start with a magic ring.

  • Crochet 12 DC into the ring.

  • Pull the ring tight.

  • Join with a slip stitch to the first DC.

Total: 12 DC.

Round 2: Crochet the Sunflower Petals

Change to your sunflower yellow yarn.

  • Attach the yellow yarn in a stitch or space.

  • Create a cluster stitch to form the first petal.

  • Repeat the cluster-petal pattern around the circle until you have 12 petals in total.

  • Join with a slip stitch to complete the round.

The cluster stitches create the raised, textured appearance of sunflower petals, giving each motif a lovely floral finish.

Note: The exact number of chains and double crochets in each petal cluster depends on the specific cluster technique used in your original design.

Completing the Granny Square

After creating the sunflower motif, continue crocheting the background rounds to transform the circular flower into a square.

  • Attach your chosen background yarn.

  • Work stitches and chain spaces around the sunflower to form four corners.

  • Increase at the corners to maintain the square shape.

  • Continue until the granny square reaches your preferred size.

  • Fasten off and weave in the loose ends.

Repeat the process until you have six identical sunflower granny squares.

Joining the Six Granny Squares

Once all six squares are complete, arrange them side by side to create the bucket hat's floral sides.

  • Lay out the six granny squares in a row, with the sunflower motifs facing outward.

  • Join the squares along their edges using your preferred joining technique, such as slip stitching, single crochet, or the mattress stitch.

  • Connect the first and last squares to form a circular band.

  • Check the circumference against the crown of your hat.

  • Attach the granny-square band to the completed circular crown, making sure the sunflower motifs are evenly positioned.

The six-square construction gives the bucket hat its distinctive floral look while adding texture and color to the sides.

Maker's tip: Before joining the squares permanently, check their combined width and the crown's circumference. Adjust your tension or square size if needed to achieve a comfortable fit.

The result is a beautiful combination of a classic circular crochet crown and vibrant sunflower granny squares, making this handmade bucket hat a standout summer accessory.

Part 3: Shaping the Bucket Hat Brim

The brim gives the hat its classic bucket shape and provides additional shade.

To create a slightly flared brim:

  1. Begin with a round of SC or HDC stitches.

  2. Add evenly spaced increases to gently widen the brim.

  3. Continue working rounds, distributing increases as needed to achieve your preferred flare.

  4. Finish with a round of SC for a neat edge.

For a softer, less flared brim, use fewer increases. For a wider, more dramatic brim, add more increases gradually.

You can also use a reverse single crochet stitch for a decorative finishing edge.

Tips for a Beautiful Finished Hat

  • Check your tension: Milk cotton yarn can create a soft, defined stitch texture. Keep your tension consistent for a smooth crown.

  • Measure as you crochet: Head sizes vary, so measure the crown and hat depth rather than relying only on round counts.

  • Use stitch markers: They are especially helpful when working in continuous rounds.

  • Be mindful of the brim: Too many increases may make the brim wavy, while too few may cause it to curl.

  • Care for your handmade piece: Follow the yarn's care instructions and handle your crochet hat gently when washing and drying.

Styling Your Crochet Sunflower Bucket Hat

A sunflower bucket hat can be styled in many ways, especially in a tropical setting.

For a beach day: Pair it with a flowy cover-up, a swimsuit, and sandals.

For a casual coffee date: Wear it with a simple cotton dress or a white top and denim shorts.

For a tropical adventure: Combine it with a linen outfit, a woven bag, and comfortable sandals.

For modest summer fashion: Style it with a loose blouse, a long skirt, and comfortable flats for a relaxed, feminine look.

Handmade fashion is not just about following trends. It is about creating pieces that reflect your personality and bring joy to your everyday life.
